These past few days have been CRAZY sunny and CRAZY hot! Well, hot in Juneau terms…On an average sunny summer day, we see temperatures anywhere between the upper 50’s, to 60’s, to MAYBE the occasional 70-degree day, but this week we found ourselves in the upper 70’s!
While these temperatures may seem pretty low for some located in the lower 48, we can assure you they have vastly different effects up here in Juneau. For starters, the humidity can reach up to 100% on certain days which can add to some of the intensity.
So how do you prepare for SE Alaskan heat? (quite the oxymoron, if you ask me)
We provide water and snacks for all of our guests on our tours, but we also advise you to wear temperature-friendly apparel and to bring sunscreen. Even on a partially cloudy day, the intensity and closeness of the sun can still leave you with burns, so we recommend applying sunscreen at least once before tours.
We also advise guests to bring a rain jacket, even on seemingly clear, sunny days. Our weather can change in what feels like an instant, and due to microclimates, one area of town can be completely sunny, while 50 feet away, there’s a downpour. We joke that the weather apps are pretty unreliable up here…With our city spanning a couple thousand square miles, it’s hard for an app to generalize the overall temperature around every corner. In summary, come prepared!
